Re: Using the registry in Vista.

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hmmm. I have spent most of today trying to get Vista 64 to install on my dual-core AMD64.
What I get, right after typing in the activation code, is the informative error "Windows
Installer detected an error and must be restarted"

Makes you wonder if there is any adult supervision at Microsoft. This violates so many
priniciples of good design the mind boggles.

I've replaced the video card and upgraded the BIOS. Still no luck.

I tried hosting on VMware, but they don't support graphics at levels > 1.0, meaning Aero
graphics (which I will need) won't work. And VMware doesn't seem to understand the
concept of "evaluation"...I am trying to evaluate a copy to see if I can recommend it to
my clients, and I can't get tech support because I have a "trial copy" (hey, guys, if I
don't get any tech support, when the trial copy expires, I remove it from my machine and
never look at it again, and certainly never recommend it to any of my clients). It can't
see any of my network, and I've spent many hours with the manual trying to figure out how
to make it work, and I've convinced myself I've done everything right, but no luck.

BTW, in spite of what Apple says on their commercials with personified PC

I started developing on Vista a few months back (on RC1) and I haven't
changed anything to access the registry. The same issue exist as with XP
(limited user can't access some areas except read only), but that's nothing
new.

I haven't started programming to target Vista yet. (First, I need to buy a
new computer that has Vista.) Currently, depending on my program, they run
on either XP or Server 2003.

Can I access the same areas of the registry in Vista? I've been putting
everything in local machine. Can I continue to do that?

If I can't, what do I do? If I write a service... They start up before a
login. Right? So how do I use the registry in that case?
