I'm getting messages such as "can not access a necessary file msvcr80.dll". I wondered if I uninstalled via Add/Remove Programs the MIcrosoft .NET Framework 2.0 and then ran Windows Update, whould Windows Update reinstall it for me, and would tha fix the problem?

It sounds like you haven't installed the Visual C++ Redistributables on the machine experiencing the problem. You will find it in your %VC_HOME%\SDK\v2.0\Bootstrapper\Packages\vcredist_x86 folder. Deploy that along with your application.
