When I boot VS2005 after a system restore it spends some time
renconfiguring itself before opening up, and I now think it is this
process which is fixing it (irrespective of the state of other things on
the machine).
I saw it hang there also on Thursday (with the panes partially painted) and
said, Oh no. I had to do other things, and then left for the day. On
Friday morning, when I first came into the office, Vista had rebooted for
whatever reason overnight (most annoying all my apps closed and I needed to
remember where I was at), and when I launched VS2005, it spent a few minutes
with the configuration dialog up. I thought that was strange, but it has
worked fine since. Try rebooting a couple times. Microsoft has added so
many heuristic hang/crash detectors that you may trigger one of them to fix
it for you permanently. :-O
I wish Microsoft would write a log exactly what it updated and when, but I
guess that is too consumer unfriendly. ;)
