Please just reference this message the next time one of those insane "MFC is dead"
discussions starts up...
Microsoft has admitted they have not publicized well their commitment to MFC and native
code, but it is there and they will make this more apparent in the future. .NET has not
killed MFC, nor is there anything in the plans through the next two releases to kill MFC
and native code. Rather the opposite: there is a commitment to support them and enhance
them. The technical people feel that the perception that MFC is dead is the result of
poor publicity, not anything rooted in any fact visible within Microsoft or the
development groups.
We gave a lot of feedback, and made it clear that the "fit and finish" aspects of making
the IDE usable and consistent are really important. This will have little impact on the
next release (it is too far along to change anything in its schedule, apparently) but
should ideally have some serious impact on the next release + 1. That's about the best
commitment we could get...that they'll think really hard about this for the next release +
1. We had interesting technical discussions with various people, but I'm not sure I can
talk about anything that was discussed in any detail due to NDA considerations. A lot of
what we saw was labeled "Microsoft Confidential" and I'm taking that seriously.
One thing I was told we are allowed to say is that there is a continuing commitment to
support and enhance native code support and MFC in particular.
So ideally the "MFC is dead" discussions are dead. For the next several years, at least!
