What does the .APS file do?

Two files which "clean solution" fails to remove are the .NCB and .APS files
created by the compiler.
I have to close down VS2005 and remove them manually from time to time and
get them regenerated from scratch when things get a bit odd.
NCB is, I understand, "intellisense" information.
What does APS do?
Is there a way of cleaning them from the IDE?
