Actually, File Manager was far more usable than the current Explorer
mechanism. The
problem is that when you have to move lots of files around, it is hard to
get the various
Explorers properly tiled on the screen, whereas with File Manger you just
maximized it and
said "Tile Windows Horizontally". Two mouse clicks, and you were done!
It isn't anywhere
near that well done. The horrid fascination with top-level windows hides
the fact that
there are simple tasks that should be satisfied by simple solutions, and
cute solutions
that look cool don't necessarily function as well as the older solutions.

I think both File Manager and Explorer are a joke. I've used Windows
Commander (now Total Commander), a Norton Commander clone, for years and
would be lost without it.

First requirement: 100%, that is 100%, of the screen space is required for
my tasks. Any
amount of screen space taken up by gadgets, widgets, things, etc. is lost
space and I'm
not willing to sacrifice it. Vista seems overly fascinated by using up
screen real estate
for toys. At least the preliminary versions of Vista I've seen; when I
asked about
getting rid of the crap that was using up critical screen real estate,
they seemed to
think that they (Microsoft) own the screen, and not me.

This used to be true, but I have real estate to spare on my 30" 2560x1600
monitor.
