DId anyone get the reason the Eclipse project was called Eclipse? (It was a replacement
for the Sun development environment, which it was uniformly agreed by all, sucked
totally...)
A number of people have commented that if Dave Packard had his name first in the company
that the operating system would be better-named today...(a line I wish I'd thought of...)
What I find odd about the Microsoft culture that I've seen is that ntsd is actually
considered a debugging tool (real programmers don't use GUI interfaces?) It makes dbx/gdb
look positively sophisticated.

I did some development on HP-UX about 10 years ago, and the experience is
as
you describe it. And I have helped recently with some development on
Solaris,
and it is as painfull as I remembered it (and you describe it).
I did development on VAX/VMS systems 15 years ago and the development
environment was indeed poor. However, I have also done quite a bit of
development on Digital UNIX/True UNIX beginning 10 years ago and there was a
nice IDE provided by Digital that was fairly good. Granted, it was not as
good as Visual Studio is today, but it was as good as the comparable
development tools on Windows at the time.
I haven't done much on UNIX lately that wasn't a port of code that I have
written on Windows first, but Sun in particular has a decent development
environment based upon NetBeans I believe. I'm surprised that you didn't use
these tools.
The one thing that I have noticed is that Microsoft has made a real effort
to get first-rate development documentation to the developers. Most of the
UNIX companies (Sun, HP, IBM) are still lacking in this respect. In
addition, Microsoft has concentrated on its development tools far more than
the *NIX companies so that their product is far more polished.
