I tried, but a .rar file is some exotic archive format unknown to WinZip, so I have no
idea how to open it. Put up a file in zip format and I might be able to look at it, but I
can't deal with obscure compression algorithms.

RAR is the native format of WinRAR, which does ZIP and a bunch of other
formats. I switched to WinRAR years ago and haven't missed WinZip in all
that time.

Several things sold me on WinRAR over WinZip, which for all I know, has
caught up to WinRAR by now:

1. "Solid" archives provide better compression than treating each file as a
compressible unit all to its own. (The RAR format is also supposed to
compress better than ZIP.)
2. Strong encryption.
3. Multivolume archives with data recovery volumes.
4. The ability to show archive contents as a directory tree.
5. The ability to preserve NTFS permissions and streams.
6. Command line support comes with the package instead of a separate
download, which is one less thing I have to deal with to set up my
home-brew backup system.
