Replacing the system mouse cursor

Hi Everyone,
I'm a PhD research student and have made a mouse-like input device that
tracks position and orientation. I would like to provide the user with
useful feedback through the system GUI, rotating and scaling the
windows mouse, but I am unsure how to proceed?
I assume that I will have to hide the mouse cursor and create some sort
of overlay, however my knowledge of the windows platform is somewhat
simple, and an initial Google search didn't yield anything.
Any help is appreciated,
Andrew
