You can also check out sci.crypt to discuss your requirements (recommended!), and/or go see http://www.LibTomCrypt.com. Tom is ill-tempered and bigoted against Windows, but his stuff builds OK, and is free to the public domain; endian-neutral, portable, and thread-safe. Personally, I recommend AES-256 in CBC mode for new applications.
