Well, I disagree. AFAIK the VC++ Express edition comes with the STL and
lets you code against Win32 SDK and the .Net framework. Admittedly this
is not all the bells and whistles that is desired by most professional
programmers. But if you're a student its a good product for learning
standardised C++ as you're probably unlikely to care about MFC and ATL.
In the distant past I learned my trade with Borlands Turbo C++ which at
the time was only compiling DOS executables. Doing GUI programmes would
have been a distraction and depature from learning the rudiments of
C++.
