Let me be sure that I understand what you do exactly.
There are two things: what I do, and what I'm *going* to do. :-)
My Excel table has a few columns including:
....., Entry-type, ID1, ID2, English-text, French-text, German-text,
.....
At the moment the "entry-type" and the ID's are ignored by the translation
program. The Enlish text is the key and the translation program creates a
new RC file with all exact occurrences of the english text (as a whole
string and case sensitively) replaced by the french text, and another one
with German and so on.
This has all the disadvantages that you mention.
So the plan is to do better as follows. The stuff to the left of
English-text is "location data".
Entry-type is something like STR or DLG or MNU according to whether the text
is in
a string table or a dialogue or a menu.
For string table entries ID1 can be what I like; ID2 is the string ID.
For dialogue entries ID1 is the dialogue ID, ID2 is the control ID.
The translation will proceed as before using the English-text as the key BUT
ALSO checking that the location-data matches. This will allow the same
string in different places to translate in different ways.
Finally I have a new module of my translator to write. This will read the
English RC file and create a collection of { Entry-type, ID1, ID2,
English-text } from it and then go through my translation table updating
those columns (and appending any which are not in the table, and maybe
marking any table entries which are no longer found).
In this way, the order of doing things will be:
Edit English RC files.
Then
Run program to update the translation table.
Run the translator to create foreign languaneg RC files.
Run the compiler to create foreign language DLLs.
Copy them to where they're needed.
I'll put it all (the "after then" part) in a big batch file - and Bob will
be my uncle. :-)
If it works, I might polish it up and sell it :-)
