I bought it. It wasn't until Office 2000 that activation was required and
activation failed because I installed it too many times (on the same
machine).
MS was going to refuse to activate it until I posted in the original EULA
which came with it (since filed in the cylindrical filing cabinet). My
argument was that I was using the software legally (which I was) and they
could not nobble it in such a way as to make it inoperative. I believe
their actions were illegal.
I had a problem once too and I just called into support and the instantly
reset the count. I guess you just had a bad experience. You're right of
course. If you paid for it and it was an installation issue then MSFT is
wrong to not let you reinstall on the same machine as many times as you
would like. Sorry to hear that. I understand your discouragement now.
And all my software is legal.
Glad to hear it. Seriously, I wasn't trying to imply otherwise. I do
believe that there are a lot of people that didn't understand that just
because you had a disc and a code it didn't mean you could install it
wherever you wanted. I don't think they were "pirates on purpose". I think
it was just the way the industry was going. My guess is that Microsoft was
losing a lot of $$$ to honest people. The bigger issue, of course, is the
dishonest ones. I don't think activation really attacks them though. They
just figure out a way around it, but stealing someone's Open License ID or
something like that.
