Not sure what you mean by "unneeded overhead". Note that to function as a keyboard, pr to
be connected to a serial port, the device must be physically connected to the machine, but
with TCP/IP, you can plug a wireless PCMCIA card into a slot and use it from
anywhere...really convenient if you need to work in a large building. My client has a
limitation of about 25ft. to do reliable serial port transmission at 115200bps, but his
customers have units installed over large "geographic" areas, up to several hundred feet
from the computer. TCP/IP works really well at distances. Cable length matters. Wireless
capability matters. Your solution limits the user to some rather stringent cable length
limitations.
