Is this just eye-candy, or are there improvements in functionality and/or
usability?

Eye-candy wastes a lot of time (a little CPU time -- but that doesn't much
matter -- and a lot of programmer time playing with things that don't
improve the product one bit) and we'd be better off *without* it.
