As usual I have left out some information ;-)

The computer I tested on was not attached to the LAN. The user still used
his domain name when i logged in. I assume that Active Directory keeps a
local copy...

In local users his name didn't exist and when I tried to add a user to the
local group it didn't display his name in the list of names that could be
added.

To get around this I added a local user with the same name as the domain
user and added this user to the local group. Then everything worked!

However, since I don't know anything about Active Directory, I don't know
if this will cause any trouble...

The computer is running Windows 2000
