No, they are not disabled. I've never had a problem with them.
Make sure you have data transmit of one side of the cable connected to data receive on the
other side. In general, if you are using hardware flow control, you will also need modem
control signals. Make sure you have either a null-modem adapter or a null-modem
("LapLink") cable. Alternatively, you ARE using a null-modem cable, but the device is
properly configured to be a modem-equivalent, in which case you will need to add another
null-modem adapter to swap the signals back to where they belong, or use a straight
extension cable.
