Does anyone here know if there are compatibility issues with Microsoft
VC++ 6.0 and the AMD 64-X2? I recently installed the compiler on my new
Dell E521, and it's giving me ridiculous error messages, and doing other
bizarre things (like saying "Internal Compiler Error," locking up files
that remain locked even after the machine is shut down and rebooted, etc).
I know, I know, 99.9% of "compiler" errors turn out to be pilot error
instead. But the code I'm trying to compile is very similar to code that
runs fine on a Pentium IV machine, and the installation is a recent
installation on top of a clean OS (XP Pro).
The reason I got the new Dell AMD in the first place, is that Mathcad
version 13 just flat refused to run on my older AMD system. So I know
that hardware issues do sometimes pop up. Mathcad runs fine on the new
AMD system, but now MSVC doesn't. Sigk.
Are you running a 64 or a 32 bit version of XP? 64 bit might cause problems.
Have you tried running an intensive memory test? C++ compilers are apps that
place the highest stress on memory. I have seen dodgy memory cause internal
compiler errors on projects that compiled fine on other machines.
