Visual C++ 6.0 crashes upon startup when not connected to LAN

I can no longer run the Visual C++IDE on my laptop unless I am connected to a
network at the time I start the program. I get an error telling me that an
instruction at 0x00000011 references memory at 0x00000011 and that the memory
cannot be read. If I am connected to a LAN I do not get this eror and the
program starts normally. There is nothing about my installation that
requires network access. Indeed, I have used it on this computer for a
couple years with no such problem. All of a sudden i cannot work
"unconnected". I have done virus scans and spybot scans, which found
nothing. has anyone experienced this or a similar problem before. Any
sugestions as to what I might do to resolve it?
