Installation problem

I have recently upgraded from W98SE to WXP and I am now trying to install
VC++ 6.0 again. When I try to install the 'service pack 4' I get a message
saying that installation was not completed successfully. And when I try to
install VC6 directly, I get a message saying that installation has started
and then it simply 'hangs' without doing anything more.

Is there some basic incompatibility between VC6 and WXP? If not, can anyone
suggest why I am not able to install this software?

With thanks,

Gerry
