LNK1104 Cannot open file MFC42d.lib

I'm trying to debug a program using the latest VCnet compiler
and DirectX9c graphics, but get the subject error message
when trying to compile in debug mode. (Release mode runs OK.)

I do have two instances of that lib on my computer:
C:\program files\microsoft SDK\lib\IA64\mfc
C:\program files\microsoft visual studio\VC98\mfc\lib
and a MFC42d.dll is in:
C:windows\system32

Can someone tell me how to get rid of this link error?
