I might even write another "little birdie" routine, to watch a set of

That could be interesting.
Many years ago, I turned the first such "birdie" loose on msnews, monitoring for
things like "substantially identical" body text across multiple newsgroups, and several
other spammy characteristics. It proceeded to generate about a half million spam
cancellation /suggestions/ over several months. An associate of mine volunteered to
review the suggestions as they came in, disapproved a tiny few, and passed most on to
the server within a few hours of the spams.
That period ended when someone at MS decided to stop accepting any NNTP cancel messages.
(there were good reasons, but spam retention shot WAY up)
Eventually, some internal despamming facilities got added, but any time I run
the old "birdie", within a day it always detects more that got missed.
I'm still flabbergasted when msnews displays postings from the torvil virus, despite
that it practically puts "look at me, I'm a torvil virus!" right in the message-id header.
