    Just occurred to me that the behavior you described in your original
    post is ~exactly~ what happens if you hold the Alt key down while
    doing whatever. ...As if something in the hook is munging the KB state
    table. Not that it solves the real problem, but I suspect if you hit
    escape a few times it restores normal behavior.
