Your pretty good workaround on WMI does well, but it does not return all the parameters (only few parameters were returned)on all machines running different windows os (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95).

parameters returned on Windows NT Machine:
Chasis Type, OSSerial,Drive Serial, and CPUID
parameters returned on Windows 2000 Professional
Chasis Type, OSSerial, and Drive Serial

Any further workaround?
