extracting a part of a bmp file using c++ (no intel libraries! )

i m more interested in low level image manipulation. can anyone suggest
me how to extract many images (many images on a black background) join
them as if it were a jigsaw puzzle.it is an exercise that my com
teacher gave.. all i m able to do is to read that image! thats it...
pls help!
