I'd say the size you display that picture at would have more to do with the
amount of RAM needed, than the original size of the file. To give an extreme
example, you might have a 2 MB JPEG picture that you display at about
2 in X 2 in (2 inches square). In that case you could just work with the final
bits that are displayed, rather than the 2 MB of the original image.

I did say you might want to investigate it. It is entirely possible it may not
suit your needs (if your image is quite large...)
