I'm trying to figure out whether I'm notUsed to be a bit more common with OE5, and particularly on high volume
getting posts or whether the server is
reporting false new posts. This morning
my newsreader (OE) says there are 7 new
posts since 1 AM Monday, EDST. (A number
displays next to the newsgroup name when
that group's posting data loads.) But I
see no new posts. This problem has already been
happening in other groups. The VB.Net group
*seems* to have had 20-30 or more posts
over the weekend, but I only saw 2 or 3.
Anyone else having trouble with reported
posts vs actual new posts? I've never seen
this odd symptom before.
server clusters with long retentions (like the MS server, 90 days).
It appears to be related to the way OE pulls headers then bodies and
synching issues within clusters. Sometimes headers/bodies may still be
propogating across a cluster when OE tries to pull them, a body may
not be available from a different server in the cluster to the one OE
got the header, the server may be creating message IDs out of order,
or various other little issues that pop up to corrupt OE's DBX/counts.
Firstly, check your 'view' to ensure that it is showing all messages
(or unread as required).
Secondly, compacting your DBX will sometimes help
Tools->Options->Maintenance->Clean Up Now->Compact.
Thirdly, you can try 'Catch Up' (right-click group in folder window
and select Catch Up). If you have any DBX corruption though this may
cause other issues.
If you still have issues you can try other options from 'Clean Up';
1. Remove messages - will delete all local bodies (only new bodies
will be retrieved in future).
2. Delete - will delete all local headers and bodies (only new
headers/bodies will be retrieved in future).
3. Reset - will delete all local headers and bodies and reset internal
folder counts (the folder will act like it has just been added with
all messages available on the server treated as new).
After any of those also run a Compact again to ensure a clean DBX.
And last, but not least, you can delete the group, close OE, open OE,
compact, then re-add the group (essentially the same as 3. above).
