Users need to move away from the work as admin mentality. It is one orthe
root causes of many security issues with windows. And it's a mentalitythat
pretty much only exists on the windows platform.... Why?
Because it's *convenient*. In addition to the
general rejection of Vista by business, there's also
a mainstream rejection:
You obviously have not worked with systems other then windows - or you would
realize that your statement is completely absurd. The fact is no other
mainstream platform allows it's users to run as an admin by default. Yet,
Apple is considered the height of usability and convienience...
The model of users having limited permissions has been the norm in *nix
systems for decades (Which Mac OS X is a variant of). The system admin
account, root on a *nix system, is reserved for actual admin duties. It works
easily and effectivley because software is written with the expectation
that it will not be run with administrative privledges unless needed.
Microsoft has only recently started comming around to this way of thinking
(and it's about time) - but, it's going to take time for the software to catch
up.

The first link above is a version of the recent NYT article
that requires signing up with the NYT website,
"How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Tolerate Vista".
It advises to get SP1 so that one has the option of fully
turning off UAC. If NYT articles are advising people to disable
UAC then it seems to me that something is not working
with Vista's "security model".
UAC in it's current incarnation is probably a bit to naggy - I would agree with
that. But, it is not broken - it just needs refinement.
Last week I went to my chiropractor and he blurted out
that he'd got an XP disk to overwrite Vista on his laptop. His
tone was triumphant. :) Is my chiropractor just stupid?
No, not stupid. Their are valid reasons for this. Especially if you have
certain legacy hardware or software (mostly hardware).
Personally, I like Vista. It does have a couple of quirks, but overall, it is
actually quite enjoyable to use. But, your chiropractor is certainly entitled
to disagree.
And don't start throughing sales figures at me. Go look at XP's corporate
market share after 2 years. By that measure, Vista is actually doing better
then XP.
Likewise all the doctors, lawyers, academics, etc. who want
to control their PC but don't understand how it works? The
fact that it's so hard to understand is partly due to the
complexity, but in large part it's due to insider arrogance
and deliberate obfuscation by Microsoft. (Though to be fair,
Microsoft has no monopoly on arrogant, unsocialized geeks
who feel contempt for their end customers.)
I can't think of any other field outside of tech./programming,
with the possible exception of MDs, where the practitioners
are typically so chauvinistic, routinely treating all non-insiders
as idiots who can't think for themselves. Which is a lucky thing.
Otherwise I'd probably have to hire a fuel technician to fill my
gas tank, and my stove wouldn't allow me to cook anything
hotter than lukewarm.
LOL... You just described your self. It's becoming more apparent that you
don't have experience with anything other then windows - or you would realize
that UAC, while not perfect, is actually a move in the right direction. A
move toward a model with a 30-year track record.
I don't expect you to agree - but, since UAC is based on 30 year old tech, I
thought certainly you would be all joy and light about it...
