My point is that when Microsoft do things well I'll give them the credit
that is due: Windows, even considering the known issues is a remarkable feat
of engineering, it's a miracle it works as well as it does considering the
range of hardware it's expected to work with and I give Microsoft full
credit for that, However when they screw up, for example with the botched
security model in Vista, or the excessively processor hungry alpha-blending
I see no reason to pretend everything is rosy or to pretend the problems
don't exist or to invent spurious rationales - Credit where credit is due,
Critique where that is due.

I partly agree with you, but I do not feel the Vista security model was
botched. It can definately use some refinement, and MS is taking some steps
in that direction with Windows 7. I expect it will take a couple of
iterations before they get it 100% right :) But, it also requires some work
on the part of developers to understand and live within the confines of UAC.

Users need to move away from the work as admin mentality. It is one or the
root causes of many security issues with windows. And it's a mentality that
pretty much only exists on the windows platform.... Why? Because MS and most
software developers (and I am not excluding my self here), have not really
played by the "rules". Vista's UAC is just making us rethink this attitude
some.
