FWIW, though, I don't much like coming down hard on posters looking for
VB.Net information, and telling them that isn't really VB. Microsoft, the
publisher of the product, calls it VB in very large letters
I thought Mike's post had a polite, informative tone.
He was just explaining what any new DotNetter needs
to know. Until they do know, new DotNetters will be
repeatedly confused, going to the wrong groups, downloading
strange, unusable code samples, etc.
We all know that taking the ".Net" from VB.Net was
dishonest and designed to confuse. On top of that, the
MS lackeys have made it their job to loudly assert
otherwise. MS may have a legal right to name 2 things
"VB", but we don't have to help their strategy along.
(And I really don't think the Pontiac analogy is quite
analogous. I don't think anyone buying a 2008 LeMans
is under the impression that it has nifty chrome
ashtrays all around and seats 6 comfortably. :)
I don't see how it helps uninformed posters to avoid telling
them why they're confused. That's a bit like walking into
a family get-together where there's just been a fight and
nobody will tell you what the weird vibe is all about because
nobody wants to ruffle feathers. :)
That's why I wrote a basic explanation to use as a
generic response, explaining how radically different the
"two VBs" are so that new people can know the basic
landscape. But of course, Bill M. and Paul C. can't be
stopped from appending their nonsense.
