Verizon has notified me that they will restricting newsgroups to only
the Big-8.
Would someone be so kind as to explain an alternative way I can
monitor this newsgroup?
Thanks,
I'm too lazy to search thru all those posts to see if the correct answer
is there, but ... as long as you are using
news.microsoft.net or news.microsoft.com
and whatever other server names they might have, you will have no
problems. Nothing will go away AFAIK so far.
If you're reading these groups at
news.verizon.net,
then yes, they're going to go away because they aren't part of the "big
8", but ONLY on Verizon's servers (or anyone else making the same
changes).
Verizon will continue to carry only their "big 8" groups and the
0.verizon... groups, so they say. AFAIK MS has no such plans to change
anything, nor does it carry the type of groups Verizon claims are the
reason for dropping theirs.
That said, I do know that MS IS farting around with some of their
binrary groups, though. My sister is an artist and they've been playing
musical groups for about the last 6 months now as MS drops one and then
another without notifying anyone.
So if you're at news.microsoft, netobjects, jrsoftware, corel, spamcop,
etc. etc., ... those are all groups that aren't planning any changes;
the so-called "private" gropups, a terrible misnomer but beside the
point.
news.microsoft.net BTW, is free, as are many, most of them.
Those groups aren't being done away with; they're just not going to be
carried by Verizon and their ilk; they do still exist.
MS does piss me off because they're dropping a LOT of single sourced,
very useful, non-porn, non-controversial groups too; particularly the
medical, disability and disease support groups. So they piss me off but
what they don't do is surprise me with these types of bone-headed moves.
If it isn't easy, MS doesn't do it anymore. IMO they really want the BW
back to use for their FIOS customers.
And of course, you can always pay for newsgroup access, but ... I
wouldn't.
HTH
Twayne
