Not sure I agree that we would disagree on the "known trolls" list...as you've said, "we all know who the troublemakers are".

So why is it, then, that we all don't simply ignore them? We let them turn this list into a forum for debate EVERY SINGLE TIME! And if there hasn't been a debate in a day or two, or someone just wants to stir the pot, they post something new...like "Sorry but I have to ask", for instance.

I'm not sure what you're responding to. I was very specifically suggesting that we all STOP responding to trolls and start posting a list of known trolls so that others would know not to respond to them and to ignore their posts. This would seem to be in keeping with what you're suggesting about not cluttering up UseNet needlessly.

Actually, I did that a long time ago...and several other evangelists as well. There's a couple that've recently become more active that I haven't gotten around to yet, but their day is coming soon.

There is no question in my mind that these people are here strictly in the hopes of converting everyone to the product of their choice; whether it's because of evangelical belief, kickbacks from MS, or some more nefarious scheme, I don't know or care.

Actually, I was thinking that it might not be a bad idea to regularly post a "Known Trolls" message, much the same as the "Please don't respond to spam" reminder. Block all messages from said trolls and/or respond only by bumping the "Known Trolls" thread and I would imagine the trolling will soon stop. Even if it doesn't, everyone who reads the group will know who these people are.


It is likely VB(classic) is going to be in the wild for some time yet and it is likely some hapless inheritor of anothers codebase is going to need assistance or the resource of instances relating to their issue from UseNet.

An individual cannot with clear concience believe that filling UseNet with all this background noise is in keeping with the concept of UseNet.

Peppering some initial dialog with keywords to be certain they will be encapsulated in some future search (which will also reveal all the crap responses where the body wasn't effectively and appropriately snipped) will waste the time and add frustration of someone, somewhere.

It smacks of not having the faintest of notions of right or wrong on many levels. It isn't good citizenship. It isn't good net-citizenship. Period.
