That seems like a slightly hasty conclusion. In my
experience EXEs are about the only thing that does
work on newer "high-nag" systems. If someone on XP
running anti-virus tries to run a .vbs file, their AV will
go haywire. The same operation with a .exe is allowed.
The difference is that an EXE is considered "normal" while
most people don't use VBS.
While that is true dot net is not a vbs.
And who do you know who's allowing script and
flash in their email? Flash is what was used in a
hacking contest last week to break into Vista.
Javascript is the weak link in almost every online risk.
Vista won't let the PC's owner into their own system
folder, but the "Russian Business Alliance", using Flash,
apparently doesn't have much trouble. What's going on with
the managed code trend is bigger than just security.
It's all muddled together with commercial interests, who
owns the PC, Microsoft's attempt to rent their software
while also selling it, etc.
Things will likely have bugs but the point is these bugs can be fixed by
modifying the OS. What's significant there is the code these russians wrote
doesn't need to be modified to fix the problem.
BTW, which would you rather have running on your system, a flash written by
these guys or an exe? Didn't think so :-)
And that's not even the point you're addressing here.
Your implied point seems to be that you want to use
managed code because offering to handcuff yourself is
"the right thing to do". And you think that everyone else
should agree with that dubious premise. (Well, nothing
new there.)
It's a reality of the future, if you want to put your app on someone's PC
then you have to agree to the terms that those users want. No one gives a
stuff now I know but they will when 99% of apps are managed.
