There seems to be some question as to whether or not VB6 will do the
job; what about more recent versions?

there aren't any more recent versions; VB ended with VB6.

I have programs written in an early version and would like to update
them to be Vista compatible.

The issues are mostly around what directories you put files in that the users update and what permissions you set on install.
