Re: Versions

Actually you're asking MS to sell Vista to you for less
than it retails for in the US.

Rubbish! They sell it in the US for about $330 and they sell it in the UK for about $695!!! That price difference would require duties of 110%, which is of course totally and utterly incorrect.

The EU sets ups custom duties for a vast categories
of products. Any where from 0 to 85%. I haven't been
able to discover the exact category "Vista" falls in . . .

It is patently obvious that you have not been able to discover the exact category, because your guess is wildly inaccurate! The total of the US export and UK import duties for a copy of Microsoft Windows, according to Microsoft themselves, is zero, although there is 17.5% VAT to be paid at this end at the retail side.

but it is obviously high.

Pardon? Where on earth did that come from? It is not high at all, and it is certainly not "obviously high". How something which is not actually true can be "obvious" to you, without any evidence at all to back up your claim, is mind boggling! You seem to have a very strange and unusually weird reasoning ability. How did something which you have not checked and for which you have provided no valid data at all become "obvious" to you?

Duty is based on Cost PLUS Insurance PLUS Freight (CIF)

And exactly how much do you think the cost of duty and handling plus freight is going to be from the Micro$oft pressing and packaging plant in Ireland to my own home in England, about fifty miles away as the crow flies! Wake up, man!

Besides, I've already covered that in the previous thread which dealt with this matter. The TOTAL COST of handling and packaging and freight and insurance EVEN FROM AMERICA TO THE UK is very much less than $46. I know that for a fact because Microsoft once sent me a package direct from their own premises in America to my address in the UK. That package contained not only a full retail boxed version of Windows but also nine jotter pads and four special graphics pens.

If you'd like to see a copy of the Micro$oft receipt then let me know. If they can send me that lot for a total shipping and handling and insurance cost of $46 (which they in fact did) then the cost for sending just the retail boxed version of Windows must be very much less than $46!! And the total tax and duties paid on the entire consignment, which is clearly shown on the Micro$oft receipt, is ZERO!!! ($0.00)!!!

If MS was somehow managing to put any of this "additonal money"
in their own pockets, you might have some justification for your rants

But that is exactly what they are doing. They are pocketing almost all of it!

Your anger should be directed to your government where
the responsiblity properly lies.

You are making statements that you cannot back up with facts, and statements which are totally untrue. In fact you are talking a load of bollocks! Almost all of the EXTRA 350 DOLLARS PER COPY is going straight to Micro$oft and its distribution chain. If you think that the British government is getting a large share of the $695 that Micro$haft want to charge me for a copy of Vista Ultimate (which I can tell you for a fact they are NOT) then BACK UP YOUR CLAIM WITH SOME FACTS.

Mike
