I think if I remember K&R correctly (it's been a while since I actually read it the last time, thankfully :) ), their viewpoint was more that C was designed to be maximal, rather than minimal -- although as I write, I guess we're saying the same thing from the other viewpoint -- I think of it as dense in content, you're think sparse from the verbiage side...

Oh, yes, the days of the two- or three-pass paper-punch compilers. Now _there's_ something to be yearned for from the past! (NOT! :) ).
