Mr. Morley has it right. I consider a newsgroup a large room with many
people where conversations are made, bottom posting makes little sense in a
conversation.Think about it...
If two people were having a conversation, and before each person talks they
have to repeat what the other said from the beginning of the conversation
each and every time they speak. what a pain (below):
Hi, how are you
HI, HOW ARE YOU, I'M DOING FINE THX
Hi, how are you i'm doing fine thx, yeah me too, what are you doing today?
HI, HOW ARE YOU I'M FINE, YEAH ME TOO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY, I'M GOING
TO THE ZOO
Hi how are you i'm fine, yeah me too, what are you doing to day, i'm going
to the zoo, are there tigers there this year?

Ah, but the same argument generally applies to newsreaders as well.
Typically, you've been reading the thread linearly and are following
what's going on in a sequential order; the quoting is just to give context
to what's being said. I rarely ever read the quoted post within a
message. If I feel the need to read the previous post, I read the
PREVIOUS POST, not the quoted version.
By the same token, I will often trim out all but the previous post when
quoting, especially if the text is getting long. (Though not always...I'm
not perfect.) This, of course, makes any kind of linear reading
irrelevant, since you can't possibly get the entire context of the thread
from any one post, and are forced to read the previous messages in any
event (as you should, IMO).
Thus, top-posting or in-line posting are the appropriate methods.
Bottom-posting is just plain wrong! :-)

You're wrong. Top-posting means that the reples are in reverse order
making it harder to scan through the thread in sequence, especially when
rplies are interspersed in the middle of earlier posts. Bottom-posting
tends to preserve the sequence in better order making it easier to follow
or pick up.
In something like email it's typically a back and forth between 2 people
so it makes sense to have the new info at the top because everybody
involved in the conversation knows the flow already. In news postings
there are typically more people interacting randomly and bottom-posting
just works better.
