I cannot agree with that. Top posting makes just reading easy and so is more
important it helps to locate the right answer much faster!
I participate in newsgroups for 10+ years, been bottom poster in the past
but not anymore!.
Technology shoot up light years ahead but old customs are holding untouched.
1.
Now-a-days it is not difficult to trace the flow of messages to see which is
response to what regardless of the news reader.
2.
Dial-up connections are rare so the online charges are not a factor anymore.
One can just follow the flow or just select previous message reply was
posted to.
It is only one click away!

Do you know what pushed me to start that thread?
I am watching another thread titled "Form is truncated....." started
November 29th by John Morley.
Please just try become an ordinary person interested in it and browse
through it!

Top posting is not a bad habit, it is a preferred style. It makes sense
in that
any reader who happens upon the message can gather the gist of the
conversation
without hunting for previous replies. Normal speech follows this pattern,
you
normal identify the topic you are going to address, before you discuss it.

How would it be if stories were told in a bottom posted manner?

If you put those in their proper order, it makes for eaiser reading, so

the posts in a thread.

What makes top posting annoying is that some do not trim the replies to
highlight what they are addressing in their own post. This is a two fold
problem in that readers have to scroll an excessive amount (as you
indicated) and including the entire converstaion wastes space everywhere
it goes. (The server, your system, my system, and the system of every
reader of that message). If everyone would trim the prior posts to cover
only enough to convey the idea, top posting would be far less annoying
to scroll through.

And just to complete the argument (to those who say one can just go
back and read previous messages to understand what is being discussed)
depending on the reader, and display style, finding the start of a sub
thread
of a conversation may not be all that easy to do. Fnding the first post
of
the thread may be a bit easier, but when discussions take a detour, and
sub
conversations develop (as they often do) locating the start of the detour
may be difficult at best.
