I thought XP (Home anyway) was pretty stable! I haven't modied mine for
yonks and I like it very much.

I suppose a lot of people are probably in that situation,
especially if they have dial-up. My neighbor is still using
XP SP1 and seems to do fine. I've been using Win98SE
since 2001 and have never changed anything. But Microsoft
has gradually redefined what's normal with their constant
patching and auto-update service. And many of their customers
seem to be getting used to that view - seeing Windows as
something more like a process than a product. I suspect
Microsoft is quite happy about that. If people regard updates
as critical, regarding Windows as a fluid process rather than
a stable product, then they have a reason to accept Microsoft's
WGA spyware, and they're also closer to accepting Microsoft's
idea of "services and software": Charging for Windows both
as a product AND as a utility service that costs per usage.
