When I said that your USB drive might not be powered down when you switch off your computer I of course meant that the disk itself would stop spinning but that the circuitry of the drive might still be connected to the power source so that the disk buffer memory did not lose its contents, or perhaps (but no so likely, I think) the buffer memory in the drive is non volatile in some other way. I've never used such a drive so I don't know for certain and my own "hands on" hardware experience is from the days when we hadn't long moved away from punched cards and magnetic beads :-)

Anyway, perhaps if you would post back with *full* details of your system and of the tests you are performing then we'll be in a better position to provide a more detailed answer to your question. As is the case with most things, the devil is in the detail ;-)
