Pop - Thanks for the comments.

I downloaded a registry cleaner named "Easy Cleaner" (from ToniArts)
that I had read about elsewhere. I installed it and made a "find
stuff" run but didn't allow it to do anything yet. It found a whole
list of "problems". Since I've had no other issues with this computer,
I'm leary about going any further with this right now - especially
after reading your comments. I'd like to keep this limited to ONE
problem right now rather than have to deal with a whole bunch of
problems.

It's not unusual to find a litany of problems, especially after a long
period of time. I don't know that app you mentioned, but if you're sure it
came with no spyware/malware, and it has a rollback feature so you can put
the registry "back", it might well suffice. I can't yae/nay it since I
don't know the program.
A good prog though, will let you look at each individual entry it wants
to work on, and even allow you to change the registry yourself if you want
to, and I like it when they'll jump to the registry entry for me so I don't
have to get out regedit.

Something I'd like some clarification on: assuming that the problem
here is that something got screwed up in the registry (since it can't
find the ADODB provider which apparently IS there), wouldn't it be a
prudent thing to do to simply re-register the ADODB provider? Are
there some instructions somewhere as to how I might go about doing
that?

Definitely! For some reason I thought you'd already done that; sorry.

Or, can I un-install it some way and then re-install it?

Any additional comments will be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I don't feel qualified to help you with that so perhaps
someone else will step in. I only -think- I know what to do there and we
all know how dangerous that can be<g>!

Registry corruption isn't all that unheard of, FWIW. But, that's why I
suggested "Last Known Good Configuration". It'll reload the previous
registry and important system files. So will a System Restore, or restoring
a System State.
You get to that menu in XP by tapping the F8 key about twice per second
during a startup, immediately after the POST but before the Registry starts
to load, until the menu appears. It's a choice in that menu. Once you see
color on the screen, the registry is loading; you'll have to try again
during another reboot.

Sorry I'm not more help.
