Don't know if this really fits in here but I was just wondering if there
were
any stats out there regarding how many people still write apps using VB 6?

Also, what's the life of a VB 6 app? I'm sure it has to do with how it was
written. But is there a time coming when a VB 6 app just won't work on a
future operating system?

Just lookin for opinions.

Tks

There are numbers out there, but are difficult if not impossible to trust.

Problem One is most are presented to support one view or another. So if you
listen to MS you will see dramatically decreasing numbers. The other is that
often the definition of "VB" changes depending on the study. Some include
Office VBA, and ASP for example. The "subjects" of the studies can also vary
dramatically. Some include anyone that calls themselves a "developer".
Others only those who are "programmers".

Also people tend to lie. <g> It seems to be a universal disease among
programmers to escalate the languages they "know and use" compared to what
they are really doing on a daily basis.

These various and important qualifications are rarely published along with
the "numbers".

My gut feeling is it is probably about half of what it was ten years ago but
still a very high number. I based that on the fact that due to their
popularity MS has been extending the Extended Support for just about every
product of the Windows 2000 Era (for lack of a better term <g>) . Win2k
extended support was to end 2007, it has been extended to 2012. Office 2k
was to die 2006 it has been extended to 2010. SQL Server 2000 extended to
2012. By inference this includes VB5/6 (as it uses the same technologies)
though not specifically stated.

It is also of note that support for VB2003 and earlier dotNet versions, is
gone. Yet VB6 is still supported on Vista.

Will there be a time when they will not run? Yes. When that will be? I
haven't a clue other than it will not be soon enough for MS, and too soon
for somebody else. <g>
