All I'm saying is it's a solution that I have tested over and overlot
again and it seems to work. Is it extra steps? Yes...but if it saves a
of headcahes in the future why not take advantage of it?
Besides, you only
have to create the script once. But, doesn't one have to distribute
components via a setup anyway?
No. That's why I was interested. I use a custom
version of the PDW and don't ship any ActiveX, so
on both scores I'm not worried about the issue of
registering during setup. But as I explained earlier, I
also give away free components for scripting. As of
now I've recompiled most of those components to check
the OS on load and quit with a "not supported" message
if it's Vista. (I don't want to be fielding questions about
Vista-specific problems for free components.)
But one never knows. I may eventually decide to support
Vista with those components, and having to install them
with a full setup program is absurd.
In any case, I don't see any harm in trying to
understand the ins and outs of how Vista works... and
figure out to what extent it could possibly be a usable
OS. This is a programming newsgroup, after all. :)
The way I figure it, an OS that doesn't let admin be
admin is a broken system. The questions now, in my mind,
are 1) To what extent can it be fixed and 2) To what
extent can the problems be circumvented.
