Many of you were a great help to me when I was deliberating whether
to purchase the legit version of Visual Basic 6 from "swdev2". You may
remember that he fielded all your questions (and mine) with unflappable
good humour. Well, I'm happy to report that he is a man of his word. The
package arrived here in Aust and seems to be OK.
Very pleased to hear it. As I said a week or so ago, it all sounded quite "Kosher" to me.
I do have three small questions
Usually the smallest questions are the hardest to answer ;-)
1 When going to help for anything (frequent for me!) I *always* get
asked to insert the MSDN disc 2 into the CD drive. He has sent the
two discs OK, but surely there's something wrong if I can't just access
the help files straight off my hard disk?
Yes, there is. But first let's have a look at your second question . . .
2 Also, whatever I look up gives me a huge list including FoxPro
and C++ references. The list is so long that finding a topic is quite
difficult. If I had installed by "custom" and chosen only the Visual Basic,
would it automatically limit the help references to that?
The short answer is, "No". And the longer answer is, "What you have done as indicated in your Question 2 is the thing that is actually causing the problem you have encountered as described in your Question 1!!!
Micro$oft have kindly arranged it so that all possible help file references are included in the scrollable list, whether you installed "the answers" to those items or not. Items that have "installed answers" are shown in normal type and items that do not have "installed answers" are shown in light grey type. Clicking an onything shown in light grey type will result in a request for you to insert the MSDN disk.
What you need to do in order to solve this problem is to install *ALL* of the MSDN files (using both disks). The fact that you chose to install only the VB6 help files is what is causing your current problem. Put the MSDN disks back in your drive and run the installation program and INSTALL THE LOT.
Sadly, when you delve into the help files in the Index you will then be presented with a scrollable list of perhaps one hundred thousand million zillion trillion items all shown in standard dark type, so you will need to scroll through all of that in order to find the items you are interested in, which is a major task! However, even that Micro$oft nonsense is infinitely better than scrolling through the same one hundred thousand million zillion trillion items with perhaps ninety five thousand million zillion trillion items being "greyed out" and requiring you to insert the MSDN disks when you click any of them! I seem to remember telling you a long time ago Alan about the VB5 help files being infinitely better than the VB6 help files, but you didn't seem to believe me. Do you believe me now?
Anyway, to cut this short, the best advice I can give you is to install THE ENTIRE MSDN help file (all of it from both disks) and you will then never again be asked to insert a disk. Also, unless you are stuck for something very specific, forget all about scrolling though all of that help file looking though all ther help for every product under the sun searching for help specific to VB. Instead, just type the keyword you are insterested in into some VB code and hit the F1 key and the context sensitive help systyem will take over and you will be taken immediately to the appropriate help pages.
I told you about these VB6 help files Alan. Now do you believe me?
3 Finally, an easy one I expect. Does service pack 6 incorporate
all previous service pack fixes
Yes. It includes all of them. It also includes some "bugs" that were not there before ;-)
