Select Case - abominable?

Given that thread I posted "Empty string equivalent to vbNullString" brought
up a lively discussion on Select Case statements, and given that I like them
over several If Then Else constructs, I thought I ask why it is that others
feel they are so, well, distasteful. I find them easier to read over many If
Then Elses and, from what I'd always read, admittedly some time ago, that
they are faster. Why are they so abominable to others?
