Re: Simple DBMS in VB

If you are _truly_ doing this as an exercise, then part of the exercise might
entail some research. You might begin by looking at the structure of DBase
files (no one owns the structure of the files AFAIK). There is a plethora of
detail on them in the wild. Once you know the structure of the files, there
isn't a great leap from there to create them from scratch in VB (I have done
this) and read and write to them (I have done this too). Also, don't be
surprised if there isn't some VB Source out there to get you some info.

This place is where you come when you are already into your project and are
having technical issues that the veterans here can and will generally help you
solve. Asking to have someone conceptualize the scope and structure of an
undertaking is IMO a pretty big ask.

Look into ADO disconnected recordsets. They give you the power and

Purely as a learning experience I am thinking of writing a simple DBMS
in VB. I do not want anything fancy just a simple engine that would
store and retrieve data to a single disk file. The data should be
able to be relational (parent child relationships). The engine should
provide an object oriented interface (no SQL). Simply a DB object
that has child table object which inturn have columns and row etc.

I am just having a bit of difficulty in getting started. Can anyone
point me towards some resources or give me some insight into how to
create a simple DBMS.

I am aware of the facilities provided by ADO, but as I said in the
original post what I want to do is to create my own custom DBMS.
Again I am not looking to be able to do anything fancy just simple
storage and retrieval of data. The problem I am having is
conceptualizing the mechanisim used to implement relationships. I do
not want to use random access files as these make storing variable
length data difficult. Also I would like for the finished engine to
store all data (including any index info) in a single file.

Thanks
