I have read through Randy's page at the link you provided several times, and everything else I could find using Google.
Let me wrap up something I'm working on and I'll open my "test" project and try a couple of things you mentioned.

It seems Randy quotes from Brad Martinez regarding the return
of the Boolean type. Perhaps it should get updated(?). I went by
the declaration from the WinAPI Viewer (2004).

The text at the link above seems to indicate that the constant,
ICC_USEREX_CLASSES, applies to Comboboxes (?). The link
above has the following comment after it... 'comboex. I'm not sure
what that means. The other flags seem to indicate other controls to
get loaded, e.g. tooltips, statusbar, treeview, listview, etc.

So perhaps trying to flag them all... (???) <g>
