Ralph, do you have any references to some info which might specify which
"system" files we should be excluding for Vista?

I don't know how accurate or complete, but there is a list in here,
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx

David

Thanks, Dan

Our VB6 app was installed by a Vista user initially without a
problem.
The
user has indicated that the first thing he did when setting up Vista
was
turn off User Account Control.

The user then decided that he wanted to demo a different version of
our
VB6
app...same setup.exe, with the version being selected after install.
So
he
did a CP, removed original app, then reinstalled.

About 90% of the way through the second install it fails. He passed
on
the
install log, which shows in part:

0007C010|TSU:E0017|0409|28BA158E797C7A61||Error while opening

key

Result=1

The user went in and fiddled with the permissions on the above key
and
reran
setup.exe. This time it got past the above key, but failed on
another
key,
same hive.

Now it seems this has something to do with installing OLEAUT32.dll,
but
what? I've read through some of the posts here, but most seem to
deal
with
Vista not liking where you store data on the file system. Why would
a
VB6
app install OK once, but then fail thereafter?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dan

The easiest solution is Don't attempt to package that file. It is an
OLE
'system' file. These files were once part of MDAC and other upgrade
packages. This is no longer allowed with Vista. It has its own
version.

You likely need to remove other 'system' files from your package.

Best guess, but only a guess, the first install probably succeeded
because
the OS ignored the attempt to install these components the first time
around.
