Delphi has picked up a lot of the former VB programmers as well.
I've been very pleased with what I've found there. It's not Basic, but it's
sure as heck not C either. I've gotten used to the differences now and I
like it a lot. I still type a Basic function name now and then<g> but I
guess that's to be expected after using Basic so long.
The architecture of the Delphi system (VCL and the underpinnings of it, over
and above the Pascal language) is outstanding. It's a real shame they
couldn't have built something like that for VB.
I still prefer Basic. It's just not reasonable to use it for work I expect
to keep alive for any length of time.
I paid big bucks to "get in the game" with Delphi. They've changed their
marketing now (and are spinning developer tools off as a separate company).
I've got the full BDS (includes native Win32, .Net, C++, etc). For those
wanting to just get in the door with Delphi you can now get a free version
at http://www.turboexplorer.com. For the turbo version you are restricted
to just one flavor (Win32, .Net, etc). The only restriction on the free
version is that you'll have to "live with" only the 200 or so built in
components (can't add 3rd party).

Ive been visiting this newsgroup for over 5 years now and I remember a
time
when there was 300+ posts most days. Nowadays its definately a lot less;
sometimes below 100 posts (and some of them are often dotnet related). Im
talking weekdays of course. I dont visit the VBNet groups much so dont
know
whats going on there. A recent Evans Data survey shows that the use of
Microsoft's Visual Basic among developers is down significantly, but
Microsoft says otherwise:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2065392,00.asp
This survey states developer use of the Visual Basic family has dropped
off
by 35 percent since last spring. Thats a huge figure! I dont want to
start
another vbNet - vbClassic debate. I am a hobbyist programmer and dont
work
in a programming environment or even meet any developers so am curious
what
you guys actually see in the real world. Naturally MS the business will
tell
us what they want us to think but what do you really see happening first
hand. Are people generally using VB6 less? Are the VBNet users declining?
Is
this survey a true reflection of what you see happening?
Because VB6 is 5 years old, people are drifting away from it. VB dot
net has driven a lot of people away from "VB" itself, but some people
are also switching to VB-like languages made by companies other than M$.
Delphi has picked up a lot of the former VB programmers as well.
