Beyond whatever is specifically spelled out in the COM specification we
are
pretty much at the mercy of what ever terms Box, Rogerson, et al,
decided
to
use. If you go back at look at all the articles in MSDJ you will find
that
M$ has never been consistent either.

In a book named "The Essence of COM",
a notably cranky author includes a humorous
page in the introduction where he explains
that COM and OLE are blurred together,
and that ActiveX actually has no meaning
whatsoever. He also mentions that the first
version of "The Essence of COM" was named
"The Essence of OLE with ActiveX".
I'm afraid that literacy is not the forte of
either Bill Gates or his marketing team.

.... But I can't hang around here chatting about
terminology. I've got an outside-the-box solution
to leverage across my enterprise. :)

Too true.

The first popular book on 'COM' programming was titled "Inside OLE2", COM
was mentioned in passing. In the preface of Don Box's classic "Essential
COM", he describes the book as the "rich oral history of COM" and as a
reflection of his own understanding "of this rogue technology". Even the
experts tend to punt.

AFAIK there has never been a COM programming book published without sidebars
either lamenting the terminology or attempting to clarify it. With great
justification for the former, and just more FUD in the latter. <g>
